Canyoning in Flumineddu

After numerous years of inactivity, my twin brother (and also geologist) Jo De Waele, invited me to come along on a short expedition to the Flumineddu Canyon in Eastern Sardegna. The canyon, also known as "Su Gorroppu", carves a 450 m deep scar into Permian to Cretaceous sediments (170 - 140 Million years old). The canyon exposes wonderful anticlinal fold structures, resulting from the Alpine tectonism (65 M.yrs ago), and its current morphology is mostly related to Tertiary and Quaternary karst phenomena.
